The Clayton fireman of the year was Robert J. Lightcap, as honored last Saturday night when the Clayton Fire Company held a dinner and ceremony to install officers.
Officers for the new year are: Deputy Chief William R. Carrow II, Lt. Marc C. Gray, Lt. John W. Davis Jr., 2nd Asst. Chief Rodney Whalen, Lt. Kenneth A. Virdin Jr., Gary A. Faulkner, fire police J. Wallace Hudson and Walter A. Lamon, 1st Asst. Chief Jeffrey Hurlock, Chief David T. Warren, Capt. James J. Hurlock, John Davis Sr. and Raymond Wilhoit.
Little Miss Clayton Fire Prevention is Kim Turner.

Ballard, Graham graduate from state police academy

Officers Dennis B. Ballard and Bruce Graham Jr. were among 17 graduates from the Delaware State Police Training Academy during ceremonies on Dec. 15.
Both officers represent the Smyrna Police Department. Graduation ceremonies complete the final step of a 12-week training program in preparation for the demands of police work....

Robinson wins Voice of Democracy contest

Kimberly M. Robinson, 17, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Alan R. Robinson, Jr. of Smyrna was awarded first place in the Voice of Democracy Contest for Caravel Academy....

Small numbers make up SHS girls’ varsity basketball

When girls’ varsity basketball coach Martha Everett says she will depend on every player to contribute on the scoreboard this season for the Smyrna Eagles, she means it.
Mainly because she is carrying a roster of nine with only one returning varsity player....
Everett is again assisted in coaching by J.V. coach Sylvia Brownlee this year....
Captains this year are senior Kris Russell and junior Chris Wallace. The squad is rounded out with Kim Coverdale, Amy Musto, Sherry Foraker, Amy Jackson, Talena Queen, Kristy Wallace and Janet Jones....

Boys’ basketball places 3rd in holiday tourney

The Smyrna High boys’ varsity basketball squad placed 3rd overall in the Wilmington Christian holiday tournament held Dec. 16.
The Eagles defeated Wilmington Christian 82-62 to place 3rd.
Smyrna dropped the tournament opener, a 98-81 loss to Garnett Valley, Pa., but came back the next day to defeat Wilmington Christian.
Steve Pierce was named to the all-tournament team for his two-game effort. Pierce shored 52 points, recorded 36 rebounds and blocked eight shots for the tournament.
In the win over Wilmington Christian, Pierce led the Eagles in scoring with 27 points, followed by Keandre Summers with 12, Davin Harrison with 11, Jonathan Whaley with 10, Adam Washington with 6, Gene Boyd with 4, Brian Savage with 4, and Ron Settle, Jacob Bothell and Matt Sartin with 2 each....

Gonzon places in wrestling

Two Smyrna boys participated in an eight-and-under Christmas wrestling tournament held Dec. 17 in Blackwood, N.J.
Placing 4th in the 50 pound bantam weight division was Joe Gonzon. Also participating in the tourney from Smyrna was Mark Stinson.
