Tyler Refrigeration added to Superfund

The Tyler Refrigeration site on Glenwood Ave. near Smyrna was added last Thursday to the Environmental Protection Agency’s Superfund cleanup list.

“The EPA has decided to go forward with its decision to put the site on the list and now will try to answer the question of whether there is an abatement process that can be implemented,” said Larry N. McAllister.

The State of Delaware owns the site through guaranteed revenue bonds, said McAllister, who has an option to buy the property for $1 when the bonds are paid.

“I think this is a step in the right direction,” said McAllister. “As I read it, inclusion on the list now provides for the federal government to spend funds to proceed with a plan to clean up the project.”

By Michele Hohn, the Smyrna High School Eagle Eye

Everyone should be aware of the current events going on in the world; they affect the population in many, many ways. One of the most surprising events that occurred recently was the long-awaited release of South Africa’s Nelson Mandela.

Mandela spent 27 years of his life in prison for expressing anti-apartheid views. He spent more time in prison than any high school student has been on this earth. And his release hopefully signals a more democratic life for the Union of South Africa....
