Per pupil cost in Smyrna Schools below state average
Smyrna Special School District recently released some costs showing per pupil expenditures for the 1959-60 school year. These figures showed a breakdown of total costs for the year and costs for such areas as instructional services, administration, plant operation, maintenance of school, and auxiliary services.

This compared with the total expenditure in the State per pupil of $436.00 for the previous year which showed that Smyrna spent considerably less per pupil than many districts in the state.
Of this expenditure approximately $280 went toward instructional services, the largest single item in the budget. Instructional services include teacher salaries, representing a cost to the district of over $200 per pupil; textbooks, representing a cost to the district of approximately $4.50 per pupil; library books, representing a cost to the district of $1.70 per pupil; and instructional supplies, representing a cost of $8 per pupil to the district as well as certain other miscellaneous services including guidance, library salary, etc.
The next largest single item of expenditure went toward plant operation which includes the cost of heat, electricity, custodial salaries, custodial supplies for lavatories, cleaning materials, wax, etc. with $35 being expended per pupil….
