General Assembly to face deficit

With organization of the Senate and House perfected the General Assembly is ready to proceed to business and it is expected this week will be a busy one with the introduction of many important bills. Leaders of the Republican majority members in both branches have urged speedy action in order to hold the session within the constitutional limitation of 60 legislative days….

One of the bills which it is anticipated will make its appearance early in the week will be an act to take care of the deficit in the general fund for the balance of the current fiscal year until June 30.

Governor C. Douglass Buck has stressed the importance of the Legislature giving its attention to this matter without delay. He has emphasized the necessity of passing a law to provide sufficient money to meet the budget appropriations for the next six months. To do this, it is probable the state will have to negotiate a loan.

State Auditor J. Henry Hazel estimates nearly $700,000 will be needed….

Restoration of teachers’ pay in doubt

An anticipated restoration of reduction in teachers’ salaries will be impossible if the $903,606 cut made by Governor Buck in the requests for the coming biennium of the State Board of Education is approved by the Legislature, it was said Monday by Harry V. Holloway, State Superintendent of Public Instruction….

Mr. Holloway said that for the first year of the biennium it was planned to restore $147,211 in salaries, with $295,089 for the second year, making a total of $442,300 in salary restorations and placing the salaries on a level similar to 1931-32.

The State Board of Education has requested $3,865,992 for the first year and $4,013870 for the second. Governor Buck has recommended $3,488,128 for each year.

Hall elected president of Fruit Growers Bank

At the annual meeting of stockholders of the Fruit Growers National Bank of Smyrna Tuesday, Dr. Frank L. Grier, who last July was granted a leave of absence for health, asked to be relieved of the presidency of the institution, feeling he was not physically able to make the trip weekly between his home in Milford and Smyrna.

The directors, although loathe to depart with his services, granted his request and elected Hervey P. Hall president. The new president is the oldest director in point of service and one of the best and most popular business men in Smyrna. He succeeded the late W.O. Hoffecker in the insurance business.

Dr. Grier, while he steps down from the presidency, was re-elected a director at the stockholders meeting along with Hervey P. Hall, Lewis M. Price, Harry B. Grieves, Warner W. Price, Clarence B. Raymond, Dr. C.J. Prickett, C.L. Harmonson, and William Norris, all of Smyrna.

Smyrna High basketball teams lose close games

The first basketball games of this season were held at Delaware City. Our players were under the serious handicap of having had no practice. Considering the odds against them, we can say that both the boys’ and the girls’ teams played exceptionally well.

The first game was played by the girls. The score at the end of the regulation time was 22-22. An extra five minutes had to be played. During this period, Delaware City was able to score four points while Smyrna scored only two, thus making the score 26-24 in favor of our opponents. For Smyrna, Sara Jones scored 14 points, Nancy Slaughter making the other 10.

The boys’ game was decidedly in favor of Delaware City during the first half, the score being 8-1. Though Smyrna came up in the last half, they were unable to overcome the great odds. The final score was 11-10 in favor of Delaware City. Sevil and Gooding each scored four points for Smyrna, while Spence made the remaining two.
