Former Smyrna girl killed in freak accident

Mrs. Betty Jean Wharff, 28, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J. Russell Foxwell, School Lane, Smyrna, was killed instantly and her husband, Ralph Wharff, 41, and three children were hospitalized when a runaway boat trailer crashed into their car at East Newport, Maine, July 25. Mrs. Wharff was killed instantly, according to Dr. John Sullivan, Penobscot County medical examiner, who pronounced her dead at the scene.

Mrs. Wharff was graduated from the John Bassett Moore High School in 1951. Her husband had been employed by International Latex in Dover, and four years ago was transferred to Oak Lawn, Ill., where the family lived. They were on the way to visit Mr. Wharff’s parents in Winterport, Maine when the accident happened.

Land purchased by Presbyterians

A 3,600 square-foot lot has been purchased by the First Presbyterian Church of Smyrna, it was announced today by Mr. Benjamin F. Johnson, president of the church’s Board of Trustees. The property, which is located behind the present church property on West Commerce Street, will be the site of the new addition planned by the church.

Preliminary drawings have already been submitted, according to Mr. James E. Everhart, building committee chairman. Studies are now being made by the church officers in consultation with denominational experts.

In September the congregation will meet to hear and discuss the plans which have been made. Mr. Everhart noted that all directly connected with the project were enthusiastic and anxious to get definite plans completed as soon as possible.

Grading system change approved by Board of Education

At the regular monthly meeting of the Board of Education, Smyrna Special School District, the board approved the recommended high school grading system from letter grades to number grades. This will go into effect in Grades 9-12. 93 to 100 will be equivalent to “A” for superior work; 85 to 92, will mean a “B” for very good work; 76 to 84 will represent a “C” for average work; 70 to 75, a “D” for barely passing work, and below 70, an “E”, for failing work….

Dover eliminates Little Leaguer’s tournament hopes

Smyrna-Clayton’s tournament team was ousted by Dover in the second round of their state Little League playoffs here Monday evening. The local all-stars had moved into quarterfinal play by defeating the Dover Air Force Base entry last Friday at Dover. Dover’s Steve Lonski tossed a two-hitter in downing Smyrna-Clayton 5-2. Smyrna scored two runs in the fifth as a result of two walks, a hit batsman and an error.

At the Air Base last Friday, Smyrna-Clayton’s Jimmy Craig and D.A.F.B.’s Gerald Miller engaged in a brilliant pitching duel. Craig struck out 14 and allowed no walks while Miller set 10 down on strikes and gave up 2 walks. Smyrna-Clayton scored what proved to be the winning run in the second when Franklin Smith reached first on an error, advanced to second on a passed ball, went to third on another error and crossed the plate on a second passed ball.
