Smyrna band students plan European concerts

Six Smyrna High School students plus music director Groome Mears III and wife Jill returned last week from an 18-day tour in Europe as part of the American Music Abroad program.

The program’s goals are to bring American music to Europe, and to educate the students about different cultures, music and people.

Sandi Ennis, Alison Yonker, Rachel Scott, Laura Trettel, Marc Deisem and Dawn Webber were chosen to represent Smyrna High School based on their musical ability and attitude.

They were among 95 total students from Virginia, Maryland, Pennsylvania and Delaware chosen to participate in this year’s tour.

This Smyrna group visited Holland, Belgium, Austria, Germany, Lichtenstein, and France....

Clayton Square to be town’s first subdivision

Construction is underway on Clayton’s first subdivision, which will be called Clayton Square.
According to Don Allan, of Allan Builders, eight homes are being built on a 1.6 acre subdivision located off Route 6 next to Nature’s Pride in Clayton....

So far one of the eight planned homes has been completed and will be used as an open house for the development....

“The cost of the homes are all in the $100,000 range. The cost includes the actual construction, all the extras,” Allan said....

Plans also call for one cul-de-sac entrance into the development...

Matt Sartin named to 1990 Gatorade Circle of Champions

Smyrna varsity baseball pitcher Matt Sartin, who helped lead the Eagles to their first Southern Division championship in 13 years, was recently named the 1990 Gatorade Circle of Champions Delaware High School Player of the Year....

Sartin, a 1990 Smyrna High graduate, was on the mound when Smyrna defeated Indian River 2-0 to capture the division title this past season....

The Eagles compiled a 14-4 overall record, losing in the state tourney to eventual champion Newark....

Smyrna FFA wins big at Delaware State Fair

Smyrna’s Future Farmers of America (FFA) Chapter was a big winner at the annual Delaware State Fair held in Harrington.

Smyrna FFA members Charlie Baker, Kim Dulin and Debbie Warren led the dairy cattle judging teams to a first place finish, said chapter advisor Russ Stinson.

Baker was the highest individual, while Dulin was third. The team and their advisor, Stinson, are now qualified to represent Delaware at the upcoming National FFA Dairy Contest in Kansas City, Missouri, in November.

In dairy showmanship, George Dixon finished second while Nicole Givens was fourth....

Scout Troop 135 back after weeklong camp

Smyrna Boy Scout Troop 135 returned July 28 from the Rodney Scout Reservation in Northeast, Md., after spending a week at summer camp. Sixteen scouts under the leadership of Senior Patrol Leader Ronnie Fretz spent the week swimming, canoeing, rowing, sailing, and studying mammals, plants, reptiles, geology, astronomy and forestry....

Adult leadership was provided by Scoutmaster Rodney Bullock and assistant scoutmaster Mike McGrath....
