Noel, Jones, Vaughn Win School Board Seats

A low overall voter turnout yet strong showing on behalf of the Smyrna Education Association on May 9 saw three newcomers win terms to the Smyrna Board of Education.
A total of six candidates were vying for three out of five seats on the board, and brought only 834 to the polls.
Joining board members P. Brooks Banta and Mike McGrath in July will be Donna Noel for a one-year term, Robert Jones for a four-year term, and James Vaughn Jr. for a five-year term.
Noel won her seat on the board by one vote, Jones defeated incumbent Elladean Brigham, and Vaughn ran unopposed for the longest term. Brigham had been appointed to the board last September.
The election was also unusual in that it was the first since 1976 to have six candidates, and the first since then to have three separate terms up for vote.
And of the 834 votes cast, nearly 280 came from current employees of the Smyrna School District, or their immediate family members, and retired district employees. That is nearly one-third of the total voting number.
The final tally for the night was as follows:
One-year seat: Donna Noel, 291 votes; Barbara Bilbrough, 290 votes; John Wilson IV, 246 votes.
Four-year seat: Robert Jones, 434 votes; Elladean Brigham, 359 votes.
Five-year seat: James Vaughn Jr., 745 votes....

New Owners at Corner Store
The Corner Store in Clayton has new owners. Bill and Elizabeth Goodman, and Frank Heitz took over the grocery and deli at 400 Main Street on April 27.
The new owners took over the Clayton business because Bill and son-in-law Frank liked hunting and fishing in this area so much. The Goodmans are originally from New Castle County but had lived in Frederick, Md., for the past 20 years.
The Corner Store will continue to offer groceries, subs, steaks, sandwiches and meats, but may soon expand into other items.
“We would like to expand it. We would like to add fishing equipment. There seems to be so many people around here who like to fish,” said Elizabeth Goodman....
