Two Minor Fires Over Weekend
Forty volunteers of Citizens Hose Company responded to two alarms for minor fires involving autos, one at 11:40 p.m. Saturday at The Paddock, and the other at 1:40 p.m. on Sunday.
The cars were owned by out-of-state motorists, and the fires were under control in a few minutes with no damage.
Veterans Hold Memorial Rites
Fifteen members of the Newnam-Lee-Urban Post 8801, Veterans of Foreign Wars, held services at three cemeteries on Memorial Day, leaving the post home in Clayton at 10 a.m. They visited Odd Fellows Cemetery and Glenwood Cemetery in Smyrna and also the cemetery at Templeville, Md.
The Rev. J. Howard Link, pastor of Asbury Methodist Church, assisted at the ceremonies. They fired volleys and placed flags on the graves of about fifty veterans.
65 Graduates to Receive Diplomas at Commencement Exercises
Commencement exercises for the seventy-fifth graduating class at John Bassett Moore High School will be held next Wednesday evening, June 10, in the high school auditorium.
Six-five seniors, one of the largest classes in recent years, will receive their diplomas from Mrs. Margaret M. O’Neill, president of the Board of Education. The processional will begin at 8 p.m.
Carl A. Fischer, son of Mr. and Mrs. George P. Fischer, Woodland Beach-Leipsic Road, has been designated valedictorian. The youth, active in all phases of school life, ranked first academically in his class and was one of seven honor students honored for scholastic achievement.
Other top-ranking graduates are Janice I. Ellingsworth, M. Jeanne Faulkner, M. Virginia Hurd, R. Stephen Peddrick, Sandralynn Short, and Elaine Walker. All will receive special certificates of merit and will address the commencement audience on the topic “Youth Looks Ahead.”
Dr. George V. Kirk, superintendent of the Smyrna Special School District, will present the class to the board president, Francis B. Gebhart, vice president, will award the honor certificates.
The Glen S. King Memorial Award will be announced by Mrs. Maggie Warner Montgomery, a friend of the late Mr. King and a member of the class of 1934. Special awards, including scholarship grants, will be presented by Charles V. Williams, high school principal. Robert L. Everett, president of the Smyrna Education Association, will announce the recipient of the Faculty Club Award.
Bailey Grocery Business Sold
Ollie F. Loose, a clerk in the Smyrna post office for eight and a half years, has purchased the business of the late Clay F. Bailey located on Clayton Boulevard.
The store, an independent grocery market, has been closed since Mr. Bailey’s death. It reopened on Monday, June 1, under the new management, and offers the same quality line of meats, groceries, and produce formerly available.
Mr. Loose will continue in his position at the post office, and the new business will be operated by his wife.
Rural Carriers Install Naylor
William B. Naylor, Townsend, has been elected president of the Delaware Rural Letter Carrier Association at the annual convention of the organization held in Georgetown. Norman C. Abbott is the retiring chief executive.
Other officers named for terms were John Satterfield, Dover, vice president; David C. Speicher, Bridgeville, secretary and treasurer. Members of the Ladies Auxiliary selected Mrs. David C. Speicher, Bridgeville, president; Mrs. Parker Burkhart, Dover, vice president; Mrs. Raymond Faucett, Georgetown, secretary-treasurer.
Newly-elected national officers were presented with gifts by Miss Helen Lee Pittard, Miss Delmarva of 1958.
