The Sun-Times is now accepting entries through Aug. 31 for the annual Fantastic Photographer Contest.

We’ve changed a few of the categories this year. In the past, two of the categories were “Animals/Pets” and “Nature/Scenery.” This year we have decided to have a “Pets” category all by itself, and then any photos of wild animals will be placed under “Nature.” “Landscape/Scenery” will be a separate category.

The categories are:
• Funniest,
• Pets,
• Landscape/Scenery,
• Nature (including photos of animals in the wild),
• Portraits,
• Sports/Action,
• Historic Smyrna, a special category, with a bonus of a $50 prize, sponsored by the Smyrna Downtown Renaissance Association. Photos in this category can be buildings, street scenes with people, etc., depicting historic Smyrna, but they must have been taken in the past year as described in the rules below.

The winner in each category will be printed in the Sun-Times on Sept. 8, and the runner-up in each category will be printed in the paper Sept. 15.

Rules:
1. The contest is open to amateur photographers only.
2. Entries must be taken between Aug. 31, 2009 and Aug. 31, 2010.
3. Entries must be prints. Although we realize most people are using digital cameras now, we need all entries to be prints so the judges can compare all the photos in a category side by side. After judging, we will call the winners and runners-up to see if they can email digital versions of the winning entries which will probably look better in the paper than a scan of the print.
4. On the back of the print, each entry must include the photographer’s name, town, phone number, the category, and a brief description such as who’s in the photo, where it was taken, and why it’s significant.
5. There is a limit of two entries per category per person.
6. Entries must be dropped off or mailed to the Sun-Times office, 224 E. Glenwood Ave., in the Smyrna Mart near Acme. Office hours are Monday to Friday, 8 a.m.-5 p.m.
7. The deadline is Tuesday, Aug. 31 at 5 p.m.
