Fire destroys barn
The Smyrna Fire Company responded to a call Wednesday afternoon to the Daniel Corbitt farm near Leipsic, tenanted by Charlie Reynolds. The cow shed was struck by lightning and the barn also caught and both burned down. Mr. Reynolds was not at home and as there was no telephone in the house, the alarm was given from a neighbor’s home.
The storm was accompanied by high winds and this hindered the effort to save the buildings.
No animals were hurt. The loss is estimated at $3,000, partly covered by insurance.
Farmers get needed rain
Relief from the drought which threatened crops was hailed by farmers and citizens not only in and about Smyrna but all through Kent County. A general rain fell for hours, giving life to parched vegetation.
Firemen’s Carnival starts tomorrow night
The Smyrna Firemen’s Carnival for which considerable preparation has been made will open tomorrow night on Frazier Street, between Main Street and Delaware, and continue for nine or more days. Like last year it will be a street carnival.
Prettily decorated booths are being erected, and a merry-go-round will be there for the pleasure of old and young.
The carnival directors, Harry P. Jones, executive chairman; William M. Doughten, and John W. Jacobs have been busy lining up the various attractions and events.
There will be the bingo stand, always a center of attraction, and other amusements. There will be booths of one specialty or another, and boots where you can take your chance on winning something useful.
