No, these pigs aren’t on the loose, they’re racing in the first annual Shamrock Run-A-Muc sponsored by Tully’s Ale House last weekend. From left is Bobby Vannoy, Nancy Finch and Ricky Moor.
Their respective charges in the race here are Nature’s Pride (Moor), Whiskey Gus (Tully’s), and Mogan (Vannoy). A total of nine entries raced in three heats.
The event was held to raise money for the Smyrna Public Library and $500 was brought in for the afternoon.
Keeping an eye on the start and finish lines, respectively, were Rep. Bruce Ennis and Sen. James Vaughn.
Smyrna High Graduates 170 at Sunday Ceremony

Spirits were high as 170 Smyrna High School seniors were graduated Sunday, June 11 in commencement exercises held on the school’s football field. In lieu of a guest speaker, senior class officers offered remarks along with co-advisors Carol Modesto and Donna Pursell....
Class officers David Morrison, president; Sunday Steila, vice president; Stacey Clifton, secretary; and Megan Donahue, treasurer, offered remarks earlier in the ceremony.
Valedictorian for the Class of 1989 was Stacy Conley and salutatorian was Tara Rowlands. Each also made a speech before their classmates and filled bleachers....
Senior Tom Crowe read a short poem to the graduates, which thanked the parents for helping lead them to this important day.
Senior chorus members also took the podium during commencement to sing “One Moment in Time.” David Morrison led the class in the turning of the tassels, and senior Devon Boyd led the class in singing the high school alma mater.
Kenton Has New Mayor
At the June meeting, Fred Ridley, 57, was sworn in as the new president of Kenton Town Council. Ridley will simply be referred to as the mayor of that town as he replaces former Mayor Walter Jarman, who stepped down when he moved out of town limits recently.
And to fill a vacant seat left by Jarman, Tammie White was sworn in as a councilperson for the town of Kenton....
Willis Chevrolet-Oldsmobile to Build Larger Dealership
Plans are in the works for Willis Chevrolet-Oldsmobile-GMC to move their dealerships to move their dealerships to a 10-acre parcel just outside of Smyrna on Rt. 13. The new dealership will be called Willis Chevrolet-Oldsmoblie-GMC Truck-GEO according to Skip Willis, who also said plans include breaking ground this fall.
“We hope to break ground and we’re building this for our customers and our employees mainly,” said Skip Willis. “We’re getting prepared for the 1990’s.”
The two current dealerships, Willis Chevrolet and Willis Oldsmobile/GMC, sit on two 2-acre lots on either side of Rt. 13 in Smyrna and employ a total of approximately 60 people.
In January 1987, Willis bought the Oldsmobile/GMC dealership in Smyrna.
Bill Willis said, “Right now it’s difficult for our customers to get in and out, and at the new shop it will be easier. And we really want to get into bodywork on all types of cars.”...
Improvements Set for Rt. 6, Rt. 13
Drivers may soon find it easier to make right hand turns from Rt. 13 onto Rt. 6, and from Rt. 6 onto Rt. 13.
The Delaware Department of Transportation is planning 12-foot-wide turn lanes at the intersection and a softer turning radius to allow for turning truck traffic...
