1776 The Delaware Regiment, with less than 100 men led by Colonel Haslet of Milford, helped capture the Hessians in Trenton following Washington's crossing of the Delaware.

1812 As the War of 1812 raged, the British Navy blockaded the Chesapeake and Delaware Bays.

1948 Inez Brennan of Dover and her son killed 65-year-old Hugo Schultz, a chicken farmer from Epsom, New Hampshire for his money. This was the second of the two 'Lonely Heart' murders committed by the Brennans.

2012 A Norfolk Southern freight train derailed near Bridgeville. One car carried 33,000 gallons of propane which fortunately remained intact.
