Delaware State Police have charged a 25-year-old Smyrna man after the attempted robbery of a gas station north of Smyrna Thursday night.
The suspect was arrested after he tried to rob another store in Smyrna town limits later that night.
At about 9:15 p.m., the suspect entered the Valero gas station located at 5703 DuPont Parkway (U.S. Route 13) north of Smyrna at the Joe Goldsborough/Paddock Road intersection, said State Police Master Cpl. Jeffrey R. Hale
The suspect then approached the sales counter where he confronted a female clerk and said he was robbing the store. The suspect did not display a weapon or imply that he was armed.
The female clerk fled to the back of the store without providing the suspect with any money. The suspect then fled from the business in an unknown direction.
The clerk was not injured, Hale said.
As responding troopers were conducting their investigation at the Valero, they were advised that a man matching the description of the suspect had also just attempted to rob Reba's Liquors at 111 E. Glenwood Ave. in Smyrna.
The suspect, later identified as Phillip Hardin, 25, of Smyrna, was detained by the store clerk until officers from the Smyrna Police Department were able to arrive and take him into custody, Hale said.
Hardin was charged by the Delaware State Police with second-degree attempted robbery and wearing a disguise during the commission of a felony, Hale said. He was arraigned at Justice of the Peace Court 7 and committed to the James T. Vaughn Correctional Institution in default of $6,000 secured bail while awaiting a court appearance.
Hardin will also be facing charges from the Smyrna Police Department for the attempted robbery of Reba's Liquors, Hale said.
