1772 Caesar A. Rodney, Congressman (1803-1805, 1821-1822), U.S. Attorney General (1807-1811), U.S. Senator (1822-1823), and Minister to Argentina (1823-1824), was born in Dover.

1868 The Middletown Transcript newspaper began publication with Henry Van Devear and Charles Vanderford as publishers.


1947 Republican Vera Davis of Dover became the first woman elected to the state senate.

1992 Considered the worst storm to hit the area since the March storm of 1962, a Northeaster moved across Delmarva and caused flooding and beach erosion with a tide of 7 1/2 feet at the Lewes Breakwater.
