Death wasn't related to the hostage standoff, according to the Department of Correction

An inmate at the James T. Vaughn Correctional Center north of Smyrna died Thursday, but his death wasn't related to the hostage standoff, according to the Department of Correction.

Andre R. Thomas, 58, of Wilmington, was pronounced dead at Bayhealth-Kent General Hospital at 2:52 a.m., said Department of Correction Public Information Officer Kate Weber.

His family has been notified.

Thomas was serving an 87-year sentence for two counts of possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony, three counts of first-degree reckless endangering, assault in a detention facility and violation of probation. His sentence began on Nov. 27,1998.

His body has been turned over to the State Division of Forensic Science, as is standard procedure.

No foul play is suspected, Weber said.
