Sen. Tom Carper spoke in the Senate for 37 minutes about the threat to Americans' health insurance posed by the nomination of Georgia Rep. Tom Price to be Secretary of Health and Human Services.

Price was confirmed Thursday in a late-night party-line vote.

“Our country was founded on the belief that every person has a right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. No individual who lacks access to affordable and comprehensive health care can fully attain these rights. During his time in the U.S. House of Representatives, Congressman Price, instead of working to ensure that all Americans have health care, repeatedly spearheaded efforts to dismantle the Affordable Care Act,” said Senator Carper. “Rather than work with colleagues from both parties to offer improvements to the law, he helped lead the charge against the inclusion of essential benefits, such as contraception, maternity care, and mental health treatment. He has introduced proposals to repeal the ACA, doubling down on high deductible plans and high risk pools, which have a failed history of inadequate coverage, waiting lists, and annual or lifetime limits. The cause to which Mr. Price has dedicated himself – repealing the Affordable Care Act with no plan to take its place – would devastate peoples’ lives, our health care system and our economy.”
