Robert S. Mueller, former FBI director, to lead investigation of Trump ties to Russians. Coons: Mueller is “a very strong choice.” Carper: “…guided by very strong core values.”

Sens. Chris Coons and Tom Carper released statements May 18 on the Justice Department’s choice for special counsel.

Mueller “has exercised independent judgment in standing up to administration pressures before, and that’s exactly what is required for this important position,” Coons said.

“Naming a special counsel to investigate Russian interference in our 2016 election was absolutely necessary, and former FBI Director Mueller is a very strong choice to help restore confidence in the independence and integrity of the ongoing investigation,” he said.

Mueller is “well respected and has long, significant experience at the most senior levels of federal law enforcement, including as a seasoned prosecutor. He has exercised independent judgment in standing up to administration pressures before, and that’s exactly what is required for this important position.”

Carper said, “I am very encouraged by the news that former FBI Director Mueller will be special counsel to oversee the DOJ’s investigation into Russia’s meddling in our 2016 elections. With this appointment, Deputy Attorney General Rosenstein has taken a tremendous step toward giving the American people the truth they deserve.

“I’ve known Director Mueller personally for years, and I believe he is guided by very strong core values. Throughout his career at both the FBI and the DOJ, he has committed himself to doing what is right, not what may be easy or expedient. Moreover, his work ethic is matched by his commitment to finding the truth.

“Director Mueller was held in high regard when President Bush appointed him to lead the FBI, and his reputation was only enhanced by the way he carried out that critical duty. I believe Director Mueller is the right choice for this job, and I have confidence he will do it well.”
