The scheduled repairs to the railroad crossing started Friday with an estimated completion date of Monday, Sept. 18.
Main Street (Route 6) in Clayton is scheduled to be closed for 10 days at the railroad crossing near Bassett Street for railroad crossing repairs.
The crossing was still open during the morning rush hour on Friday, but was closed by the afternoon.
The Delaware Department of Transportation (DelDOT) said that Delmarva Central Railroad Company is replacing, resurfacing, and performing general maintenance on the company’s railroad crossing on Main Street.
The road closure is scheduled to last until 5 a.m. on Monday, Sept. 18, but could be delayed due to weather or other unforeseen circumstances, DelDOT said.
The crossing on Main Street (Route 6) is between Bassett Street and Railroad Avenue.
DelDOT is advising drivers trying to travel west through Clayton from either Route 6 or Route 300, to take Route 300 at the intersection of Routes 6 and 300, and travel west to School Lane, turn right on School Lane then turn left on Route 6 (Main Street).
For drivers trying to travel east through Clayton on Route 6 (Main Street), DelDOT’s advice is to turn right on School Lane to Wheatley’s Pond Road (Route 300), then turn left on Wheatley’s Pond Road (Route 300) to the intersection with Route 6, then turn right on Route 6.
For local traffic, the railroad crossing at Smyrna Avenue just south of Main Street is scheduled to remain open.
