Smyrna Police have arrested a suspect in a shooting that happened early Monday morning in town.

At about 2:13 a.m. Monday, Smyrna police responded to the 500 block of Barley Court near South Carter Road for a report of a shooting that had just occurred.

Officers found damaged vehicles and a victim who reported a fight with one of the shooters. While officers investigated, they saw a vehicle matching the description of the one seen fleeing the shooting.

Officers tried to stop the vehicle on Sunnyside Road near Maria Lane but the driver kept going. A low-speed pursuit ended in the unit block of Magnolia Drive near Brenford Road in a driveway/garage of a residence.

Police said Calvin Boyd Jr., 23, of Smyrna refused to get out of the vehicle and began physically fighting with Smyrna police officers. During the fight, several of Boyd’s family members came out of the residence and attempted to prevent police from arresting him.

With the assistance of the Smyrna police K9 unit, Clayton police and Delaware State Police, all suspects were taken into custody. A search warrant was later executed at the residence which provided numerous pieces of evidence linking Boyd to the shooting, police said.

As a result of this investigation, the following persons were arrested and charged by Smyrna police:

Calvin Boyd Jr., 23, of Smyrna, charged with possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony, first-degree reckless endangering, wearing a disguise during the commission of a felony, third-degree burglary, disregarding a police officer’s signal, second-degree conspiracy, resisting arrest, and two counts of criminal mischief. He was released on $42,000 secured bond while awaiting another court appearance.

Sarah Nelson, 22, of Smyrna, charged with hindering prosecution and released on $500 unsecured bond.
