Virginia man arrested

Georgetown police arrested a Virginia man after he was found to be in possession of untaxed cigarettes.

The incident occurred around 11 a.m. on Oct. 14, as Georgetown officers were patrolling northbound Dupont Boulevard and observed a gray Ford Explorer commit a traffic violation. After contacting the operator, 44-year-old Tanvir Rafi of Yorktown, Virginia, officers conducted a consensual search of the vehicle and found several bags containing cartons of cigarettes. In total, 5,060 packs of miscellaneous brands of cigarettes, worth approximately $73,370, were located in the vehicle.

Rafi was arrested for four counts of possession of untaxed tobacco products and one count of attempting to evade or defeat tax. He was later released on $6,400 unsecured bond.
