THIS STORY WAS UPDATED Friday, Oct. 27 at 1:15 p.m.

One vehicle overturned in a multi-car collision Thursday afternoon on Glenwood Avenue in Smyrna.

The wreck happened at about 3:54 p.m., in front of the Smyrna Police Station near Paul Drive.

Three vehicles were involved in the accident.

Smyrna Police Cpl. Brian Donner said the initial investigation suggests that a driver traveling west on Glenwood Avenue fell asleep, causing him to rear end another vehicle which then traveled into the eastbound lanes and struck a third vehicle.

Drugs and alcohol are not considered to be factors at this time, Donner said.

The investigation is continuing.

There were multiple occupants who were taken to hospitals for treatment of non-life threatening injuries, Donner said.

Citizens' Hose Company reported that there were entrapments and injuries. Emergency crews had to pry open doors or cut away pieces of the vehicles to get people out of the vehicles.

The fire company had three units and 30 members in service for 42 minutes, assisted by American Legion Ambulance, Cheswold Ambulance, Townsend Ambulance, Smyrna Police and Delaware State Police.

More information on the collision will be reported when it is released by police.
