Delaware State Police have arrested a Frankford man after he crashed his vehicle into a pole and fled the scene.
The incident occurred around 5 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 28, as 53-year-old Rolando O. Gutierez, also known as Carlos C. Sandoval, was operating a 2006 Kia Sedona southbound on Pepper Road, just south of Lazy Lagoon Road, in Frankford. Gutierez lost control of the vehicle in a moderate left curve and drove off the west side of the roadway, where he struck a utility pole.
After the crash, it was learned that Gutierez removed his 7-year-old son from the vehicle and began walking along Pepper Road before being driven to his house by a passing motorist.
Gutierez was arrested at his residence after a DUI investigation ensued. EMS were called to the residence to check on his son, who was determined to have not been properly restrained in the van. The child was transported to Atlantic General Hospital in Berlin, Maryland, where he was treated for apparent non-life-threatening injuries.
Gutierez was charged with third offense driving under the influence of alcohol (with two previous convictions in 2002 and 2003), second-degree vehicular assault, endangering the welfare of a child, failure to report a collision resulting in injury, and various other traffic-related offenses. He was committed to Sussex Correctional Institution on $5,503 secured bond.
