A 51-year-old Florida man has died.
The Delaware State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit is investigating a fatal motor vehicle crash that occurred at about 1:30 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 13, at the intersection of Wesley Church Road and Cannon Road (Route 18) in Seaford.
A 1997 Nissan Sentra being operated by a 31-year-old Seaford woman was traveling southbound on Wesley Church Road, approaching the intersection at Cannon Road. At the same time, a 2017 Ford Escape being operated by a 72-year-old Bridgeville man was traveling eastbound on Cannon Road, approaching the intersection at Wesley Church Road.
Wesley Church Road is controlled by a posted stop sign, while Cannon Road is a throughway. Additionally, Wesley Church Road is equipped with a flashing red beacon and multiple sets of rumble strips. However, as the two vehicles converged, for unknown reasons, the Sentra failed to stop at the stop sign and entered the intersection directly into the path of the Escape. The Sentra overturned onto its roof, coming to rest against a steel pole. The Escape spun out and came to rest in front of the Sentra.
The operator of the Escape was admitted to Peninsula Regional Medical Center in Salisbury. The operator of the Sentra was treated at Nanticoke Memorial Hospital in Seaford and released with non-life threatening injuries. The front seat passenger in the Sentra, a 51-year-old male from Florida, was also transported to Nanticoke Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. His name is being withheld pending notification of next of kin.
