State police are continuing their investigation into a fatal shooting involving one of their troopers that occurred Saturday morning in Dover.

Division spokesman Master Cpl. Michael Austin said the incident took place at 3:11 a.m. Dec. 9 when a trooper from Camden’s Troop 3 stopped a vehicle on Fieldstone Court, just off Kenton Road in Dover.

As the trooper went up to the vehicle, the front-seat passenger, identified as Juliun Pitcher, 16, of Smyrna, displayed a handgun and was wounded during an ensuing exchange of gunfire.

Pitcher was taken to Bayhealth Hospital Kent Campus, where he died.

The driver, an 18-year-old man, was shot in the leg; he was treated at the Bayhealth and released. A 17-year-old in the back seat was not injured, Austin said.

Police are not releasing the names of the two teens, and no charges have been filed against them.

Austin said a handgun was recovered from the scene.

The 35-year-old trooper, who is a two-year veteran of the Delaware State Police, escaped injury. He has been placed on administrative leave in accordance with department policy until the investigation is completed.
