Some fun First State events to dive into this weekend
1. The musical “Sunday in the Park with George” is a love letter about the art of creation and the creation of art.
The title was inspired by enigmatic painter Georges Seurat’s most famous painting, “A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte."
Days leading up to the completion of Seurat’s piece, the artist struggled to make meaningful art and maintain a relationship with his lover, Dot.
An ensemble of strong singing actors perform in this challenging and heartbreaking musical about our need to connect to the past, present and future.
The musical is presented by City Theater Company and co-directed by Michael Gray and Tom Shade.
“Sunday in the Park” runs at OperaDelaware, 4 S. Popular St., Wilmington at 8 p.m., Thursday, Friday and Saturday. COST $15 to $40. INFO city-theater.org or 220-8285.
2. When you have an eight-piece band like Swift Technique, it already feels like a party before the music starts.
A combination of funk, soul, hip-hop, rock and circus - Swift Technique is a fiery Philadelphia band that’s been on the scene for 10 years.
Notable accolades include sharing the stage with big names like the Wu-Tang Clan, Snarky Puppy and Charles Bradley. The band has also jammed at popular festivals like Camp Bisco and Xponential Fest.
Swift Technique will demonstrate their unique blend of styles at Dogfish Head Brewings & Eats, 320 Rehoboth Ave., Rehoboth Beach at 10 p.m., Friday. COST Free. INFO dogfish.com or 226-BREW.
3. Symphonies and Christmas tunes go together like mittens and scarves.
The First State Symphonic Band knows this and will keep the musical tradition going in a Kent County concert.
TFSSB was born in 1951, when employees of the DuPont Co. started a company concert band.
In 1978, when corporate sponsorship was withdrawn, the band incorporated under its current name (The First State Symphonic Band Inc.) as a nonprofit.
Expect to hear nostalgic holiday melodies in the Symphonic Band’s gig at the Smyrna Opera House, 7 W. South St., Smyrna at 7:30 p.m., Friday. COST $16 general admission; $14 members, senior citizens and military; $8 children age 12 and younger. INFO smyrnaoperahouse.org or 653-4236.
