UPDATE, Dec. 22:
Delaware State Police have identified the man who died in a single-car crash Wednesday, Dec. 20 near Smyrna as Wade W. Knight, 22, of Philadelphia.
The Smyrna School District confirmed he is the older brother of Smyrna High School football star Will Knight, and a 2014 graduate of Smyrna High.
The crash happened at about 8:24 p.m., on Smyrna Landing Road, just north of Brick Store Landing Road.
Wade Knight, 22, was driving a 2001 Lexus north on Smyrna Landing Road at an apparent high rate of speed, police said.
After proceeding through the intersection with Brick Store Landing Road without stopping at the stop sign, Wade Knight lost control of the car, which traveled off the west side of the road, striking multiple trees, police said.
As the vehicle spun after hitting the trees, Wade Knight was thrown from the car, falling in the southbound lane of Smyrna Landing Road.
He was pronounced dead at the scene by emergency medical services personnel.
He was not wearing his seatbelt, and excessive speed appears to be a factor in the crash, police said.
Wade Knight was the only occupant of the car and no other vehicles were involved in the crash.
Smyrna Landing Road, between Paddock Road and Brick Store Landing Road, was closed for about three hours, while the crash was investigated and cleared.
The investigation is continuing, and police are asking anyone with information about this incident to call Cpl. Breen of the Troop 2 Collision Reconstruction Unit at 302-365-8486. The Smyrna School District released this statement to district employees Thursday:
“At (Superintendent) Mr. (Patrik) Williams’ request, I regret to inform everyone that last night, Will Knight’s brother, Wade, was involved in a car accident...and did not survive.
“Will signed with Old Dominion University yesterday, so we can only imagine the impact that this will have on the family on the heels of such joy.
“The District will be working with the family, of course, and SHS has already met to prepare counseling for their students.
“This is just an unspeakable tragedy that will have repercussions on our entire district family.”
Williams also released this statement Thursday:
"As you can imagine, our entire Smyrna-Clayton community has been affected. Certainly, we have ongoing counseling available for students and staff which will continue through tomorrow and beyond for those who need it. All of our staff, collectively and individually, are reaching out to the Knight family and will continue to support them indefinitely. Anyone who wishes to support the family at this time may contact Assistant Superintendent Deb Judy or me directly at 302-653-8585, as the family has requested privacy. Our community will be steadfast in its effort to help Wade’s family, friends and one another."
