Former Smyrna mayor and councilman George C. Wright Jr. died on Dec. 21.

"It is with great sadness that we announce the news that former mayor, George Wright Jr., has passed away."

He was born in Chesapeake City, Maryland March 9, 1932.

Wright was the first African American to serve on Smyrna Town Council and then was the first African American mayor of the town.

He also served in leadership roles in a variety of organizations including the Delaware League of Local Governments.

The Smyrna park on North Main Street is named in his honor.

Funeral services are scheduled this week, with the first public viewing Friday, Dec. 29, from 12-6 p.m., at Evan W. Smith Funeral Services, 518 S. Bay Road, Dover.

A service of celebration will be held Saturday, Dec. 30 at 11 a.m., at Asbury United Methodist Church, 20 W. Mt. Vernon St., Smyrna, with a viewing from 9-10:45 a.m., with formal home going services to follow.

Interment will be held Tuesday, Jan. 2 at 11 a.m., in Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery.
