The driver and a passenger died in a single-car crash on U.S. Route 13 near Tybout's Corner Saturday, while two other passengers were injured.
The Delaware State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit is investigating a fatal motor vehicle crash that occurred Saturday near New Castle on South Dupont Highway (U.S. Route 13), south of Hamburg Road near Tybout's Corner.
At about 10:14 a.m., Adrian Velazquez, 19, of Kearney, N.J., was driving a 2003 Toyota Avalon north on Route 13 in the left lane. For unknown reasons, the car gradually drifted into the right lane of travel, and then off of the east edge of the road where it traveled through a grassy area, police said.
The car struck a small rise in the ground which subsequently sent the vehicle airborne into an area of thick brush and trees. The vehicle's front end struck a large tree.
Velazquez was pronounced dead at the scene, police said. He was properly restrained. Impairment isn't considered a factor in the crash, police said.
The left rear passenger, Alfahtee Heuy, 19, from Hillside, N.J. was not wearing a seatbelt and was partially ejected from the car. He was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.
The right rear passenger, a 20-year-old man from Howell, N.J., was not wearing a seatbelt and was ejected, landing a short distance away from the vehicle. He was removed from the scene by emergency personnel and taken to Christiana Hospital where he has been admitted in critical condition.
The front seat passenger, a 19-year-old man from Newark, N.J., was properly restrained and removed from the scene by emergency personnel. He was taken to the Christiana Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
Northbound Route 13 northbound south of Hamburg Road was closed for about three hours while the crash was investigated and cleared.
The Delaware State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit is continuing the investigation.
