Sen. Chris Coons released a statement March 17 after John Dowd, President Donald Trump’s lawyer, called for Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein to end the investigation led by Special Counsel Robert Mueller.

“The comments from President Trump’s lawyer, John Dowd, initially on behalf of the president, are unacceptable but unfortunately not surprising. The president has consistently shown ignorance and disrespect of the rule of law, and he has demonstrated that he’s willing to attack anything that he perceives as a threat — even the institutions of our democracy,” said Coons.

“Any attempt by the president to obstruct or remove the special counsel would create a constitutional crisis and represent an attack on the core American principle that nobody, including the president of the U.S., is above the law,” said Coons.

“I introduced bipartisan legislation designed to prevent any special counsel, including Robert Mueller, from improper removal, and I urge all senators to support it,” said Coons.
