Delaware State Police said the car left the road, traveled across the yards in front of several homes and crashed into a tree just east of Concord Pike (Route 202).
The Delaware State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit is investigating a fatal car crash that occurred Friday night east of Concord Pike (Route 202) in Wilmington.
The crash happened at about 8:55 p.m. as a 53-year-old Wilmington man was driving a 1997 Toyota Camry west on Murphy Road approaching the intersection of Thomas Road.
For an unknown reason, the car drifted off the north edge of the road and struck a raised curb then traveled across several residential lawns and driveways before striking a large tree in the front yard of a residence in the 200 block of Murphy Road.
The driver, who was not properly restrained, was removed from the car by emergency medical services personnel and taken to the Christiana Hospital.
He was pronounced dead at 9:48 p.m., police said.
Police are not giving the name of the driver until they notify the next of kin.
Murphy Road between Thomas Road and Jackson Boulevard was closed for about three hours while the crash was investigated and cleared.
