Officer has non-life-threatening injuries
A Middletown police officer responding to a call was involved in a multi-vehicle accident where the patrol car flipped over on East Main Street, Middletown.
At 2:07 p.m. Thursday, April 5, the officer in the marked police car was responding to a report of a pedestrian struck by a car on Route 299 near Middletown High School.
The police car was traveling on East Main Street with its emergency equipment activated and was struck by a Chevrolet Malibu coming from Catherine Street into the intersection, police and witnesses said.
As a result of the impact, the police car overturned and came to rest on top of a Chevrolet Equinox stopped in the westbound lane of East Main Street, just prior to Catherine Street.
The officer and the operator of the Chevrolet Malibu were transported to Christiana Hospital by Middletown Volunteer Hose Co. and Townsend Fire Co.
They are both in stable condition and are being treated for non-life-threatening injuries. Both the operator and passenger of the Equinox refused medical attention at the scene.
As for the pedestrian accident, police said an adult female Middletown area resident had safely crossed the westbound lane of Route 299. As she crossed the eastbound lane, she was struck by a car operated by an adult Odessa area resident near Middletown High School.
The pedestrian was transported to Christiana Hospital by helicopter for non-life-threatening injuries and is in stable condition.
An investigation is continuing, conducted by the New Castle County Police Traffic Services Unit in conjunction with Middletown police.
