The Bayhealth Ambulatory Pharmacy at Bayhealth Hospital, Kent Campus recently received accreditations through the Accreditation Commission for Health Care in Specialty Pharmacy and Durable Medical Equipment.
Achieving ACHC accreditation shows Bayhealth’s drive to provide high quality service through compliance with national regulations and industry standards.
These accreditations will allow Ambulatory Pharmacy staff to process most specialty medication prescriptions and bill insurance for durable medical equipment.
The durable medical equipment accreditation deals specifically with providing equipment such as crutches, splints and boots to patients who need them, particularly after a visit to emergency and trauma services. Specialty pharmacy services assist with medication-specific monitoring, meaning pharmacists specialize in recommending dose adjustments, researching drug interactions and providing counseling about the unique side effects of medications used in certain disease states. Bayhealth’s specialty pharmacy accreditation will predominantly benefit oncology patients.
To achieve accreditation, an application, accreditation agreement and other related documents were submitted. Then, an on-site survey was held before a decision was made. Clinical Manager and Oncology Pharmacist Carl Popelas, PharmD, BCOP, said the new specialty pharmacy accreditation will bring another layer of convenience to oncology patients.
