Police are still investigating what caused the woman to veer off the road and hit a tree.

Smyrna police with the assistance of the Delaware State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit are investigating a car crash in which a woman died this morning, April 13.

At about 9:50 a.m., Smyrna police were dispatched to a single-car crash on West Commerce Street near School Lane.

Police said a 71-year-old Smyrna woman was driving a 2004 Chevy Malibu on West Commerce Street when, for an unknown reason, she veered south, striking a fence and a road sign. Her car traveled back onto West Commerce Street, crossed over into opposing traffic, and then ran off the road again, striking a tree in the 200 block of West Commerce Street. The crash caused significant damage to the driver’s side of the vehicle.

The woman was taken out of the car by witnesses and emergency personnel who immediately began performing lifesaving treatment. The woman was taken by American Legion Ambulance to Bayhealth-Kent General Hospital where she was pronounced dead from her injuries.

Smyrna police requested assistance from the State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit. Their investigation is continuing into what caused the crash. 

In addition to American Legion Ambulance, police were also assisted by Kent County Paramedics and Citizens' Hose Company.
