Clayton charter school also selects first sergeant major and promotes students to rank of cadet major for first time.

In a ceremony Thursday, April 19, First State Military Academy (FSMA) in Clayton selected Cadet Major Tyler Martin as the school’s first battalion commander.

Cadet Sergeant Major Jordan Chesley was promoted to sergeant major and appointed as the battalion’s first sergeant major.

Martin, Brice Taylor and Nicholas Chafardon were all promoted from cadet captains to cadet majors at the ceremony, while Chesley was promoted from cadet first sergeant to cadet sergeant major.

Taylor will serve as the battalion executive officer, second in command, and Chafardon will serve as the battalion operations officer.

“This is a great honor,” said FSMA Commandant Patrick Gallucci. “It goes to show how far we have come since we started three years ago.”

First State Military Academy, which opened its doors in August 2015, has an enrollment of 400 students that comprise the cadet battalion.

The cadets selected for promotion appeared before a board of Marine instructors and were selected based on their leadership, academic and military performance.

“Over the last three years, these cadets have demonstrated sustained performance in a variety of leadership positions,” said Col. Robert Wallace, USMC (Ret.), Senior Marine Instructor. “We look forward to them leading the battalion and school in the coming year.”
