A Clayton woman died in the collision between a car and a tractor trailer on southbound U.S. Route 13 and Brenford Road this morning at about 6 a.m.
UPDATE, May 7 at 3:05 p.m.
A Clayton woman died this morning when her car collided with a tractor trailer, hit two poles and overturned on U.S. Route 13 just south of Smyrna.
Delaware State Police said the incident happened at about 6 a.m., as an International tractor trailer pulling a loaded trailer was attempting to turn right from U.S. Route 13 onto westbound Brenford Road.
Due to the length of the trailer, the driver had to complete the right turn from the right lane of U.S. 13, outside of the right turn lane.
A 2011 Nissan Versa was approaching the tractor trailer from the rear and pulled into the right turn lane to turn onto Brenford Road, as the tractor trailer was turning right.
The car struck the tractor trailer, and the impact caused the car to be redirected into a steel light pole and then into another larger steel light pole.
Following the impact with the larger steel light pole, the car overturned onto its right side.
The tractor trailer stopped in the intersection of U.S. 13 and Brenford Road.
The driver of the car, identified as Rahvey Vails, 24, of Clayton, was pronounced dead at the scene by emergency medical services personnel, police said. She was wearing a seat belt.
The driver of the tractor trailer, a 73-year-old Maryland man, was wearing his seat belt and wasn't injured. Police didn't release his name.
The collision remains under investigation by the Delaware State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit.
U.S. 13 at the intersection with Brenford Road was closed for about five hours while police investigated and the roadway was cleared.
