Site work has started on southbound U.S. Route 13 in front of Tractor Supply

UPDATE, Wednesday, Aug. 22:

The owners of the Burger King under construction in Smyrna are planning to open the new restaurant this fall.

Frank and Karen Czerwinski said they hope construction will be finished in mid-November, weather permitting.

Site work is underway at the property on southbound U.S. Route 13 in front of Tractor Supply near the Simon’s Corner shopping center and Hardee’s.

"We're very excited to be coming to Smyrna," said Frank. "We've been looking for a location for probably eight or nine years now. My wife is from Smyrna and so we know the area well."

His wife is the former Karen Pierson who graduated from Smyrna High.

"We like the visibility of the restaurant right on Route 13, but we also like that it's close to Carter Road which is convenient for many residents," said Frank. "Being close to the Route 1 interchange is a plus, and there's a lot of growth in the area."

He said the new Burger King will provide people with a great new option.

"We know there a lot of people in Smyrna who appreciate a flame-broiled burger done right," said Frank. "We believe we have the best burgers in the business. We use fresh produce, and we cut the lettuce, tomatoes and onions for our burgers right in our restaurants."

The Czerwinskis own Burger Kings in all three counties, including two in Dover, but the Smyrna location will be unique.

"This will be the first Burger King in Delaware with the 'Garden Grill' interior," said Frank. "It's the latest Burger King design. It will be state of the art."

Some of the features will include digital menu boards inside and in the drive through, free wifi and mobile ordering available for quick pickup through the mobile Burger King app.

Smyrna Planning and Zoning Manager Win Abbott said the building will be 2,866 square feet.

The owners estimate they will hire a staff of 25 to 30 workers including a full-time management team.
