ORIGINAL STORY

A 27-year-old man from Hartly was killed late Wednesday night when his Kawasaki motorcycle collided with a car on State Route 8.

Delaware State Police spokesman Sgt. Richard Bratz said the incident took place at 10:21 p.m. Nov. 21 at Route 8’s intersection with Artis Drive, near Dover High School.

According to the preliminary investigation by the Collision Reconstruction Unit, the motorcyclist was headed east on Route 8 and approaching the intersection when a Mazda MX3 pulled out in front of him. The Mazda had been at a stop sign on Artis Drive, and made a left hand turn onto Route 8, Bratz said.

The motorcyclist, who was not wearing a helmet, braked and laid the Kawasaki on its left side, but slid into the Mazda’s left front fender and driver’s side door. He was thrown onto the roadway, landing just north of the collision area.

The Mazda driver then left the scene, going to a residence on Sharon Hill Road, Bratz said.

He came back shortly afterward and told witnesses he had been in the collision; he was not injured, Bratz said.

The operator of the motorcycle was pronounced dead at the scene, he said. Police will release his name once the next of kin have been properly notified.

Police believe there may have been alcohol consumption on the part of the Mazda’s driver, Bratz added. The investigation is continuing and charges are pending, he added.
