The owner of Scruffy to Fluffy has expanded the size and services of her business, now offering “Doggy Day Care” in a larger location.
Formerly in one storefront at 17 Village Square in the Village of Garrisons Lake, Scruffy to Fluffy is now in two storefronts including a separate entrance for Doggy Day Care with a 2,000 square-foot outdoor play area.
“Ever since I was little, I wanted to work with animals,” said owner Virginia Clark, who’s owned Scruffy to Fluffy for six years and has been grooming pets for about 10 years.
She wanted to offer Doggy Day Care as a natural extension of the grooming business, because many owners drop off their pets and pick them up at the end of the day.
“I thought it would be a good idea to offer dogs a place to play while waiting,” said Clark. “We put a sign up list in the shop and we got a good response.”
If the dog is being dropped off for grooming, the business offers the “Doggy Day Spa” package for a small additional fee. Instead of waiting in a cage to be picked up, the dog gets to go to Doggy Day Care and play the rest of the day.
The day care service is also available separately.
“It’s great not only when the owner is going to be away, but also for socialization skills,” said Clark. “Dogs can learn to get along with other dogs.”
During the day, canines can play and mingle, enjoy the soft beds and the splash pool. The staff takes care of bathroom breaks and feeding, but the owner must supply the food. Each dogs also gets his own cubbie for toys and supplies.
Indoor and outdoor play areas are available.
“Our main goal is to keep pets safe, and we have to see the dog’s vaccination records first to make sure everything’s up to date,” said Clark, who previously worked as a tech in a veterinarian’s office.
On most days, there are five people on staff at Scruffy to Fluffy and Doggy Day Care, including two groomers.
“I’m really happy with our staff,” said Clark. “We’ve tried to keep it a smaller, family-oriented business, and I think everyone does a very good job.”
