Smyrna resident Vetra Evans-Gunter has been selected to fill the vacant seat on the Smyrna Board of Education.
Superintendent Debbie Wicks said that the four current members of the Smyrna School Board interviewed six candidates for the open seat on Monday, Nov. 23.
After the interviews, the board voted 4-0 to appoint Evans-Gunter, Wicks said.
“I’m very excited, and willing and ready to work,” said Evans-Gunter on her appointment to the board.
Evans-Gunter is a Smyrna High School graduate from the class of 1979. She’s a lifelong citizen of the community and a board member at Centennial United Methodist Church in Smyrna.
The vacancy on the Smyrna School Board opened up when former board member Ginger Barkley resigned from the position.
Wicks said Evans-Gunter will be sworn in at the Board of Education meeting on Monday, Dec. 14.
The appointment will last for eight months.
A special election for the final two years of this five-year term will be held in conjunction with the regular school board election in May, with the winner of the special election to be sworn in at a meeting in July.
