Smyrna Elementary fourth graders, teachers, and parents who participated in the Lt. Governor's Fitness Challenge were honored by the Lt. Governor himself, Matt Denn, at a ceremony June 9.
To earn an award, participants had to chart the times they exercised over a 10-week period and compile enough exercise points to qualify for a gold, silver, or bronze medal.
The top medal-winning class was Ms. Whalen's/Ms. Willey's class with 20 medals. Second place went to Ms. Casterline's class with seven medals.
Bronze medals were earned by: Callie Keen, Alec Shalk, Thomas Bowman, Mike Carrow, Sharon Goldsborough, Alexus Hebert, Heaven Hernandez, Tylie Lowman, Alexandra Pharis, Samantha Snow, and Jovany Velez.
Silver medals were awarded to: Matthew Terhune, Darah Tucker, Alvin West, Alexis Redden, Colin Shalk, Guy Doron, Jacob Furman, Zachary Morris, Elijah Porter, and Jordan Wallace.
Gold medals were earned by: Emily Brittingham, Ashley Coxe, Madison Drummond, Samuel Mace, Julia Luttrell, Sydney Tusio, Allison Embert, Tyler Gilbert, Haimere Murray, Donadjah Rogers, Katelyn Sullivan, and Desmond Wilson.
In addition to receiving a gold medal, the following students who earned over 1,000 points also received a "Get Up and Do Something" t-shirt:
Julia Luttrell, 1st place, 1,448 points; Samuel Mace, 2nd place, 1,440 points; Tyler Gilbert, 3rd place, 1,438 points; Sydney Tusio, 4th place, 1,136 points.
Madison Drummond won the Top Athlete, Spirit, and Sportmanship Award and also received a t-shirt.
Teachers and parents who earned medals in the Lt. Govenor's Fitness Challenge were: Gold - Ms. Bulson, Ms. Casterline, Ms. Chumley, Ms. Hemphill, Ms. Mace, Ms. Whalen, and Ms. Willey; Silver - Ms. Schwartz; Bronze - Ms. Brown and Ms. Graham.
Ms. Bulson was the top adult finisher with 791 points.
