Rt. 1 southbound is closed near Townsend after a serious traffic accident early this morning, Aug. 27.
The collision happened near Fieldsboro Road at about 5:15 a.m., according to Delaware State Police.
A tractor trailer was traveling southbound on Rt. 1 in the right lane when it was struck from behind by another truck, police said.
At the time of the first police report, firefighters were attempting to free the driver of the second truck who has been trapped since the incident occurred. The extent of his injuries is not known at this point.
Both lanes of Rt. 1 southbound and the lefthand lane of Rt. 1 northbound were still closed as of 7:26 a.m.
Commuters are asked to use alternate routes around the crash scene. Traffic in the area is expected to be extremely heavy, police said.
