Speeding in Delaware may cost a New York man much, much more than a simple ticket after he was found with $150,185 in cash after being stopped for speeding Aug. 10 on Interstate 95.
The incident occurred at about 12:40 p.m., about 1.5 miles north of Rt. 896 in Newark
Ahmad Elshair, 24, of Brooklyn, NY, was stopped for speeding in a 2010 Chrysler Town and Country minivan.
As the troopers were interviewing him about his travels, they became suspicious. They asked for and obtained permission to search the vehicle. The troopers found $150,185 in cash in the stow-and-go department of the van.
A police canine unit trained in drug detection was then called and the dog alerted on the money as being possibly used in drug transactions. It was then seized.
Ahmad Elshair was issued a ticket for speeding and released.
To get his money back, Elshair would have to come back to Delaware and try to claim the money through a court process, said State Police Corporal Jeffrey Hale.
"He would have to prove that the money was legally obtained," said Hale. "If he doesn't come back or he does and loses, the money is turned over to the state."
Hale said police will investigate to see if he did have a legal reason for having such a large amount of money such as a high-paying job, an inheritance, or lottery winnings.
