At the Clayton Council meeting Monday night, council members discussed the lowering of the weight limit of the bridge on School Lane, stimulus money used for the opening of a well, and the fitness program for town employees.

Truck restriction on School Lane bridge

Last week, the Delaware Department of Transportation lowered the weight limit on the bridge on School Lane, which is used as a truck route. Because of the new weight limit, trucks coming or going on Route 6 (Millington Road) will have to stay on Route 6 which becomes Main Street, and travel through Clayton, instead of being directed to School Lane and Route 300 (Wheatley’s Pond Road).

Council members were unsure of the reasoning for lowering the limit on the bridge.

Town Foreman Jeff Hurlock said the new truck route could cause problems.

“Now they have to come straight through the town,” Hurlock said.

No funds for well

The town applied for a federal stimulus grant to assist the town with the usage of one of the town wells. One of the town’s wells is currently shut off because levels of arsenic are above new stricter federal Clean Water Act standards.

The town asked for federal money to get the well up and running and have the arsenic removed, but the request was denied so the well remains shut off.

Town fitness program

The council approved a fitness program for all town employees including the police department. The fitness program will be held in the Christiana Care building in Smyrna. There is no set start date.

The council is not in charge of setting up the fitness program but had to approve it before it was set-up. There will be a cost for the fitness program and it will be covered by the town and each employee individually. The town will pay for 50 percent of the cost and the other 50 percent will be the responsibility of the employee. It is on a quarterly schedule and should be started in the month of April.

Upcoming meetings

The next Clayton Council meeting will be held on April 13 at 7:30 p.m. at the Town Hall.

A public hearing for the new town hall will be held on Thursday, April 2 at 7 p.m.
