The Smyrna School District is undergoing updates and renovations at nearly every building in the district. The major renovation is at Smyrna High School where an addition is being erected. There are also smaller projects going on at three of the four elementary schools and the intermediate school.
At the July 6 Smyrna School District Board of Education meeting, buildings and grounds supervisor Clint Lasana said there are some big changes going on at the high school.
The front lawn, including the grass, flagpole, sidewalk and three of the four stairwells have been torn out from the front of the school. The windows in the main office have been boarded up and the stone base for the new bus lane has been started. Footers for the new addition on the front of the building are being put in on the west side of the building. Underground piping is also being installed.
Framework is going up in the new kitchen area. The old kitchen will be converted into addtional cafeteria seating. There is mostly demolition going on in the existing kitchen and cafeteria. The ceiling of the current cafeteria is being torn out.
Lasana said the gym construction is moving right along with the framework currently going up.
John Bassett Moore Intermediate School
The intermediate school is getting a new classroom. A locker room, which has been used for storage, is being remodeled into a classroom for next year.
“It was a locker room and we just turned it into a classroom,” Lasana said.
The tiling just started last week, but Lasana said it is about 95 percent finished.
Last year, the locker room on the other side of the gym was converted into a classroom.
Clayton Elementary
Electrical modifications are being made at Clayton Elementary. The existing electrical work in the school is no longer able to handle all of the computers and technology in the building.
CES is also having network cabling put in the original portion of the building. At the June school board meeting, finance director Jerry Gallagher said when the addition was made to the building everything was updated or new and the items in the original part of the building are old and need to be updated. The electrical work has just been started and does not have a scheduled completion date, but Gallagher said he hopes it will be finished before the start of school.

Phase II of the asbestos abatement has started in the building. The abatement consists of removing floor titles and replacing them with new ones. Phase I was conducted last summer as the first part of a three-year project. This year, phase II will be worked on and next summer phase III will fix the final section that needs to be replaced.
North Elementary
The sidewalk in the bus lane was crumbling, so they are in the process of being replaced. Lasana said it is nothing drastic, just a minor job.
“Everything that needs to be out is out and they’re in the ‘demo’-ing stages,” he said.
