Construction is progressing ahead of schedule on the new Clayton Intermediate School on Sorrento Drive off of Underwoods Corner Road in Clayton. Here's a "project tracker" update on the costs, timetable, and plans by the Smyrna School District for this fifth and sixth grade school:
Total cost: $28 million
Set to open to students: Aug. 2012
What’s changed: Since the Sun-Times last updated this project in June, the Smyrna School District Board of Education has approved a solar energy system for $559,413 and a second entrance on Sorrento Drive for $157,570.
Board President Vetra Evans said the solar energy system will save the district money in the long run with reduced electricity costs at the school.
Superintendent Debbie Wicks said, “While solar is expensive, it’s an investment in the future. We should save money each month on electric. We can do something for the environment, and the students can see the meter in the school, to see how much we’re saving.”
The second entrance will require extending Sorrento Drive, said Jerry Gallagher, school district director of finance.
About the new school: Clayton Intermediate School will have a capacity of 600 students. The Smyrna School District is planning to use the building for fifth and sixth grades. The current fifth and sixth grade school, John Bassett Moore Intermediate School in Smyrna, will continue to be used for fifth and sixth graders, too.
Who will attend the school: Under the district’s feeder pattern, students who attend Clayton and Sunnyside elementary schools will move on to Clayton Intermediate once the new school opens at the start of the 2012-13 school year. Students who attend Smyrna and North Smyrna elementary schools will still attend John Bassett Moore Intermediate School in downtown Smyrna.
Construction details: The general construction contract for Clayton Intermediate School was awarded to EDiS Company in the amount of $17.3 million, said Gallagher. That contract represents the bulk of the construction costs, but the district will also have separate, smaller contracts for items like cabling and a security system.
The total project cost of $28 million also includes architectural and engineering expenses, along with the cost of desks and furniture for the new school.
Gallagher said the general construction contract came in significantly lower than the amount the district had budgeted. That has enabled the district to add extra features like the solar panels and the second entrance.
EDiS began construction in the fall of 2010 with an anticipated completion by the end of spring 2012.
