Surrounded by family, flanked by members of the Smyrna Police force, and standing before a crowd of about 150, Wilbert Bordley took the oath of office as Smyrna’s new chief of police on Thursday, Feb. 10 at the National Guard’s Smyrna Readiness Center.

“I’m very humbled to lead this great organization into the next chapter of its existence,” said Chief Bordley after taking the oath. “I thank council, but most of all, I thank God.”

Bordley said that Delaware is a special place, that Smyrna is even more special, and that he would work to maintain that status as police chief.

Speaking to the members of the Smyrna Police Department present at the ceremony, Bordley promised to lead the agency with honor, pride, wisdom and respect.

“We can make this department better, and assume our place as one of the best in the state of Delaware,” he said.

Earlier in the ceremony, 28th District Rep. Bill Carson and Kent County Levy Court President Brooks Banta took turns welcoming Smyrna’s new police chief.

“I want to commend the Town of Smyrna in its outstanding choice for new chief of police,” said Banta.

Mayor Pat Stombaugh said that Smyrna was fortunate to have someone as chief who is not only qualified, but also homegrown.

“You have earned the position and title of chief,” she said.

Bishop Curtis Bordley, the new police chief’s cousin, also addressed the audience.

“Knowing your purpose of existence is as important as knowing your name,” he said. “I think Wil has found his purpose.”
