The new stoplights on Route 13 at Hickory Ridge Road and the Spring Meadows entrance south of Smyrna started full operation today, Jan. 21.
For the past two days, the lights have been flashing yellow, but today, the full green-yellow-red operation with turn signal arrows began.
The Delaware Department of Transportation's investigation of this intersection was initiated by community concerns and requests by elected officials, according to Sandy Roumillat, Deputy Manager, DelDOT Public Relations.
The traffic conditions at this intersection met two warrants based on the Delaware Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices, and so DelDOT evaluated the alternatives for designing a safe intersection. The new traffic control lights and geometric design elements of the intersection will reduce severe angle type crashes, provide for the orderly movement of traffic, and will interrupt heavy traffic on Route 13 to permit other traffic to safely enter and cross, Roumillat said.
