Early next month, Smyrna residents will get a new venue to voice their concerns to the mayor and council.
Smyrna Town Council will convene for a special meeting on Monday, Feb. 8 for the sole purpose of holding a public forum where citizens will be able to offer more input than in a typical council meeting.
The meeting will be held from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. at Smyrna Town Hall.
“We’re going to open the door, give it a try and see how it works out,” said Mayor Stombaugh at last week’s council meeting. “It’ll be open to the citizens.”
Stombaugh said the special meeting hopefully will be an opportunity for citizens who feel they don’t have a voice to speak.
She said the plan is to give everyone who wants to speak five minutes to address any town issues they would like.
But she cautioned that the conduct and comments at the meeting must remain “under control.”
Stombaugh said the people who spoke at the council meetings on Dec. 7 and Dec. 21 did a good job of doing so in an orderly manner.
“If this works out, we’ll do more,” she said.
Melaine Minear, spokeswoman for the Smyrna Citizens Coalition, described the Feb. 8 public forum as “a huge opportunity for our citizens to be a part of our government.”
