A severe thunderstorm brought high winds, heavy rains and nickel-sized hail to the Clayton area on the evening of June 9.
The storm toppled trees and inflicted property damage in the area between Clayton and Blackiston’s Crossroads.
The Clayton Fire Company responded to nine calls within the span of an hour and a half. These calls included fallen trees, downed wires, a gas leak, and two mobile homes that had trees fall onto them.
A barn on the Ray Davis farm was destroyed by the storm, and a camper that was inside the barn was also damaged.
Several homes in the Plantation Crossing development west of Clayton received minor structural damage due to the storm.
Hail covered the ground and made it look like it had snowed in those areas. Some of the hail was still evident the next morning.
The Clayton Fire Company had five units with 59 members in service during the storm. All units were back in the station by just after 8 p.m.
