More stimulus-funded construction projects are moving forward in Smyrna.
During evening and nighttime hours, construction workers are busy replacing old water and sewer lines underneath South Street.
Over the coming months, portions of South Street will be closed intermittently as construction progresses. Construction will take place along the section of the road between East Street and Ransom Lane.
According to the town website, construction work will occur primarily between 7 p.m. and 5 p.m. on weeknights. The construction should be complete by late summer.
This project was awarded to JJID General Contractors. The bid for the water system upgrades was $935,430, while the sewer portion came in at $879,116.
The ongoing water and sewer improvements on South Street represent two the 16 construction projects in Smyrna that were approved for stimulus loans.
Last year, the Town of Smyrna was awarded two stimulus loans – one for water projects and the other for sewer system projects.
The stimulus loan for water system upgrades covers six water projects with a projected cost of about $3.77 million. Under the terms of this loan, about 52 percent of the principal for these projects will be waived upon completion.
The stimulus loan for sewer projects was in the amount of $6 million at a fixed interest rate of 2 percent over 20 years. Ten town wastewater projects were approved under this loan.
Construction project at Lake Como
Construction is also underway on the relocation of a water main along Route 13 near Lake Como in Smyrna.
This is one of Smyrna’s six water projects that were approved for stimulus funding.
Town Manager Dave Hugg said this project was awarded to Croll Bros. in the amount of $152,992.
According to the town website, this construction began in early January and will end in April.
The boat ramp at Lake Como will be closed intermittently due to the construction.
